Endings that date a name

Boy names carry their era in the ending. In the Edo rows, -rō 郎 means son and often follows a number: Saburō 三郎, three, and Hachirō 八郎, eight. Names that end in -suke or -nosuke, like Sanosuke and Tatsunosuke, are also samurai-age. Showa names often end in -o, written 雄 (hero) or 夫 (man), as in Hideo and Masao. A second son in Showa was often named with -ji 二, as in Kenji. Modern names prefer sounds like Haruto and Sōta.

Same sound, different kanji

The list shows how much the writing matters. Kazuo is 一男 in one row and 和夫 in another. Hiroshi is 寛, broad-minded, or 宏, vast. Isamu is 勇, courage, or 勲, merit. Kanji can be read in several ways, so always keep the kana with the name. Some modern names share kanji: 翔 means soar in Haruto 陽翔 and in Kakeru 翔.

Unisex rows and where to go next

Yuki, Aoi and Shinobu are marked unisex, so they also show on the girl names page. Kanji glosses come from the Unicode Unihan database and KANJIDIC2; see editorial standards. Add a family name with the Japanese name generator, or browse Japanese last names.
