Glossary

How a full Korean name is put together

A Korean name starts with the family name, then a given name that usually has two syllables. The tool draws from 62 family names and 274 given names. One result might be Han Seo-yun 한서윤, written in hanja (Chinese characters) as 韓瑞允. Open Details to see the syllables one by one. Deal a whole family gives one family name to a roles board.

The era filter: which names sound old

There are three settings. Modern names are what parents choose now, such as Seo-jun and Ha-yun. Mid-20th century is not history. It marks names that were very common for people born from the late 1960s to the 1980s, such as Yeong-hui and Hye-jin. In a modern story these names suit a mother or an older sister. Joseon is for historical settings. Notes in the data say many Joseon women had no given name in the official family registers, so a Joseon heroine's name is often a story choice.

Native Korean names and hanja

Switch on the native Korean option to get names with no hanja at all, such as Ha-neul (sky) and Bit-na (shining). They are ordinary Korean words, so there is one meaning for the whole name. For all other names, the hanja is one common way to write the sound. Real parents pick each hanja themselves, so the same sound can mean something else in another family. Syllable glosses are checked against the Unicode Unihan database, as explained in editorial standards. For a longer list, see Korean girl names and Korean boy names.

Questions

What does Mid-20th century mean on the era filter?

It means names popular for people born roughly from the late 1960s to the 1980s. It is a style of the time, not a historical period.

Why do some cards show no hanja?

Those are native Korean names, made from Korean words rather than Chinese characters. They show a whole-word meaning instead of syllable meanings.

Is the hanja on a card the only right one?

No. It is one common writing. Korean families choose characters one by one, so one sound can have several meanings.

Why does a card say Check meaning?

Some syllables sound like rude English words. For example dong and suk are flagged. The name is fine in Korean, but readers of an English translation may smile.
