Frequency bands

Every row has a band: very common, common, uncommon or rare. Satō, Suzuki and Takahashi are the three most common surnames in Japan. Most of the very common names are plain: Tanaka, Yamamoto, Nakamura. Rare rows such as Kisaragi 如月 (the old name for February), Shinonome 東雲 (the glow of dawn) and Shigure 時雨 (late autumn rain) read as stylish and unusual. Use them for a character who should stand out. The band is a guide, not a head count.

Places and wisteria

Many Japanese surnames name a place or a landscape feature. A few kanji appear again and again.

KanjiMeaningExamples
田rice fieldTanaka, Yoshida, Ikeda
山mountainYamamoto, Yamada, Yamaguchi
川riverIshikawa, Ogawa, Hasegawa
藤wisteriaSatō, Itō, Katō, Kondō

The -tō names come from 藤. The Fujiwara clan gave samurai surnames ending with its own character, which marked status.

Reading traps

Always keep the kana beside the kanji. Hasegawa 長谷川 reads the first two kanji together as Hase, a special reading. Yamazaki can be said Yamasaki in western Japan. Saitō can be written several ways, and the list uses one. Sasaki 佐々木 uses the repeat mark 々. Kanji glosses come from the Unicode Unihan database and KANJIDIC2; see editorial standards. Add a first name with the Japanese name generator or compare Chinese last names.

Questions

Which Japanese last name is the most common?

Satō is the most common, followed by Suzuki and Takahashi.

Why do so many surnames end in -tō?

The ending is the kanji 藤, wisteria, taken from the Fujiwara clan. Samurai families used it to show their link to that house.

Are names like Kisaragi and Shinonome real?

They are real surnames but rare. Both come from poetic words, one for February and one for dawn clouds.

How do I keep the order right in English?

In Japan the family name comes first. Many English stories flip it, so choose one order and keep it.
