Read the era column first

The list mixes several generations, and the era tells you who your character is. Yeong-hui 영희, Suk-hui 숙희 and Gyeong-suk 경숙 belong to women born around the 1960s, so they read as a mother or grandmother in a modern story. Eun-ju, Hye-jin and Ji-hye belong to the 1970s and 1980s. Seo-yun, Ha-yun and Seo-a sound like recent years.

One old pattern is useful to know. In the middle of the last century many girls' names ended in -ja, written with the character 子, the same one Japanese reads as ko. Names in this style fell out of the top ten by 1950 and now sound very dated.

Native Korean names with no hanja

Some names are plain Korean words, so there is no hanja column. Bom (spring), Byeol (star), Na-bi (butterfly) and I-seul (dew) are examples. The four seasons are all here: Bom, Yeo-reum (summer), Ga-eul (autumn) and Gyeo-ul (winter). Yeo-reum and Ga-eul are marked unisex. Use the native filter chip to show only these.

Unisex rows, old-style names and flags

Unisex names such as Ji-an, Eun-u and Ha-neul appear on the boy names page too. For a historical story, look at Joseon-flavoured rows such as Mae-hyang 梅香, plum fragrance. The notes say that many lower-class Joseon women were not recorded under a given name, so check the era note before you use one.

Gyeong-suk and Suk-hui carry a Check meaning tag because suk sounds like an English word. Hanja glosses are explained in editorial standards. For a full name with a family name, try the Korean name generator.
