Kanji by kanji

Each row splits a name into its kanji. Mizuki 美月 is beautiful plus moon. Himari 陽葵 is sunlight plus hollyhock. Kotone 琴音 is koto (a Japanese harp) plus sound. The same sound can have several writings. Haru is 春, spring, in one row and 陽, sunlight, in another that is marked unisex. When you pick a name, pick the kanji too.

What the era column tells you

Edo-era names for women are often one kanji for a plant: Ume 梅, Matsu 松, Kiku 菊 and Hana 花. Names for the Heian court, like Rinshi 倫子 and Kenshi 妍子, use rare readings and read as very formal. The Showa years are the age of -ko 子, child: Keiko, Sachiko, Yōko and Kazuko. Before Meiji the -ko ending was reserved for the imperial family. Its use dropped sharply from the mid-1980s. Modern names use sounds like Yui, Mio and Sakura, and are often written with several kanji.

Flags and unisex rows

Aoi, Yuki and Shizuka are marked unisex, so they also appear on the boy names page. Sadako 貞子 has a Check meaning flag, because film fans link it to a horror ghost. Sena 瀬那 sounds like the English word for a herbal laxative. Details shows the full meaning and an era note. For checking, read editorial standards. Questions

Which girl names sound old-fashioned in Japan?

Names ending in -ko from the Showa years, such as Keiko and Kazuko, and single-plant names such as Ume. Filter by era to find them.

Can the same name have different kanji?

Yes. Haru appears as 春 and as 陽 with different meanings. The meaning belongs to the kanji, not to the sound.

Why do some names have no kanji meaning?

A few names are written in hiragana only, such as Nene ねね, so there are no kanji to explain.

Are the readings checked?

Readings are checked against the JMnedict name dictionary and KANJIDIC2. Errors can still remain, so use the contact page to report one.
