Glossary of these names
Ten shapes for a school name
Each name follows a pattern, and each pattern tells readers what kind of school it is. The Aurelia Royal Academy of Magic is the main state-sponsored school of higher learning. Imperial Vane Institute was set up by an emperor or empress. Saint Valeria Academy for Young Ladies is a traditional boarding school for noble girls. The Silver Shield Academy of Swordsmanship trains knights and protectors. High Astronomy College of Astria is for theory and research.
The realm part comes from the same kind of realm names you see on the kingdom name generator, so the school can match your map.
Fields of study
The field is a real subject. Alchemy changes matter and brews potions. Astronomy studies stars and cosmic magic. Sorcery channels raw magical energy. Artificing puts magic into objects. Necromancy is listed as forbidden or highly regulated, so a royal academy of necromancy needs a reason in your world, such as a state that licenses it.
Some fields are single Latin or Greek words: Ignis (fire), Aqua (water), Terra (earth), Ventus (wind), Lumen (light) and Umbra (shadow). They also work as student house names.
Dormitory houses
The optional house system gives each dormitory an animal or a heraldic color. A griffin stands for watchfulness and courage. A lion stands for courage and royalty. The colors use heraldry words: Or is gold, Argent is silver, Gules is red, Azure is blue, Sable is black and Vert is green. A sample result is The Griffin House of Oakhaven Academy. Questions
What is a tincture in a school name?
It is a color word from heraldry, the old system of coats of arms. In The Silver Shield Academy of Swordsmanship, the silver is the tincture called Argent.
Is a college different from an academy here?
Yes. The college pattern is for advanced theory and research in one field. Academy patterns cover state schools, military schools and boarding schools.
Which pattern fits a school for knights?
Use the Shield Academy of Swordsmanship or the Crown Prince Military Academy. Both are military-focused. The second is named after or backed by the heir to the throne.
Can the school name be reused for a guild or order?
The patterns are written for schools, so the wording may sound odd for a guild. For knightly groups, try the knight name generator instead.
